It would be a morning like no other. The morning I opened up my email to find a letter from Nicole. ”Would you be willing to fly to Mexico to take our wedding photos!?” ….Um WOULD I???

Nicole and Jasel met in 2008. Their love for eachother is so evident in everything they do. This week long celebration of a freakishly adorable couple was filled with so much love and laughs. Colin joined me for this ~~vacation~~ wedding extravaganza at the beautiful Barcelo Colonial Resort in Playa del Carmen. Destination weddings are like summer camp. We boarded the plane not knowing anyone and by the end of the week we were saying goodbye to our friends. Well, we hope! *wink*

This was my first destination wedding and Nicole and Jasel couldn’t have been a better couple to rock it out with me on the beach. We were short on time at some moments..(in Mexico…there are no clocks)…and even still I came home with so many photos, I could hardly choose which ones to feature.

Thanks to the bride and groom and their families for being so hospitable. We will never forget this time in Mexico.

We made this video for my dad for his birthday surprise party last year. It’s pretty budget, but it’s the thought that counts. And my brother’s were supposed to be a bigger part of it, but their patience ran low for taking so many stills to piece together… You’ll see what I mean.

Mexico Part ii – Family trip

There’s not much I won’t share. Well, that’s not true…I’ll never share with you my first report card in grade 1 that said “Lindsay talks too much”, or tell you how many years I’ve been lugging around to each city I’ve lived in, the recorded episode of Brad Pitt on Oprah for the first time…. Anyone have a VHS machine they’d like to lend me? I’d love to watch it. Oh, and I definitely couldn’t imagine sharing about how I used to bite my nails so badly in elementary school that my grade 6 teacher scotch taped my fingertips so I couldn’t get at them….Gross…. But everything else….? I’ll share it. This includes probably too many pictures.

This is the second part of our Mexican trip. Our teenager was present the entire time, but you won’t see too much of her. Teenagers request privacy. I want to be sensitive to this human phenomenon. Remember the first time you were embarrassed walking through the mall with your Mom? Yes… well that’s how she feels ALL THE TIME with me and my camera, I’m sure!

I can’t believe my posts have been so infrequent. I don’t know what happened, exactly, but I do know that it’s been a few weeks of much needed recharging and I’m getting organized and amped to come back in full force. I was off shooting a wedding in Mexico last week and this, combined with our long awaited honeymoon gave me a great excuse to put the Internet down. Sometimes the Internet is like a misbehaved pet that I can’t control. “Down Internet! No Internet! Bad Internet.”

We’ve been back in Canada since Sunday, but a week away from my baby was such a NEW and eye opening experience that I just wasn’t going to delve into working straight away. Since Monday I’ve been stalking my daughter during the days and have been peaking in on her every 2 minutes at night… I can’t get enough. And she is LOVING the attention. ha! Colin and I have been organizing our days and our work schedules to suit the family a bit better and we have high hopes for a successful year with our priorities aligned.

You see…… a few weeks ago…my dreams were to conquer the world….. , but now I’m pretty sure I just need to help my child conquer her world and whatever I can do in the meantime, will be icing! I’m not going to stop working and grinding out better work with every chance I get…. but I’m CERTAINLY not going to kill myself trying. I think I say this frequently. But I quickly forget.

So enough about breaks… and on with the week….

Let’s get back in the GROOOOOOVE.

While sitting against the bookshelf, I scanned the lyrics, noting just how many times she sang ‘LOVE’ throughout the 45 min cassette tape. I studied the vibrato…. just how many times she went up and down on one word… how exactly DID that riff go? Rewind, Play, Stop, Rewind, Stop, Play, Pause – now my turn… practice, practice, practice.
AND EYE–EEEEEIIIII-EEEEEIIIIII WILL ALWAYS LOVEAH YOUUUUUUUUUUUU-OOOH-EYEEEEEEE-EEEEIIIII WILL ALWAYS LOVEAH YOUUUUUUUU……….

I yearned to be her….to have her voice. Why was it that I loved singing sooooooo much…… yet, I wasn’t given this gift to move people with only one note. What is that? That was the first time in my life that I truly GOT that she was born with some outer wordly gift. That she didn’t JUST practice. No matter how much practicing I did, I would never sound even close to that.

And thus began my career in drooling over the greatest known singer on our planet. I was a professional at it. I must’ve really annoyed all those who stayed long enough to listen to me spout off about ‘oooh i’m her biggest fan…OMG….love her so much…” blah, blah, blah.. Blame Whitney for my closeted dislike for most indie bands in the early 2000′s. My love of pop ruined me for getting into offbeat songs lacking catchy riffs.

Whitney has passed away, but sadly, she has already been missed for years. I heard Diane Sawyer quote Ms. Houston as saying “Have you heard the sound of 10,000 fans being disappointed in you!” and it stopped me in my tracks. The pressure of the world waiting and watching and listening to your every note must’ve have been crippling and had to have played a part in her deeply destructive lifestyle.

Nothing is too perfect that it can’t be broken.

Take care of yourselves. Take care of your loved ones.

This video is Whitney at her best. It’s back when slow songs were sung in their entirety. No dancers, no funky wigs or tricks to keep us interested. Just pure soul. If your insides don’t want to jump out of your body at the end when she slam-dunks the air with her fists in between beats while KILLING it – then you could be dead inside. ( At least 100 of these 10 million youtube hits are from my ip address) If you don’t have the patience, at 4:01 is when it gets REALLY good.

I worked very hard for many years to learn how NOT to sound like this, but when In Mexico Let Your Inner Mickey Mouse Nasal come out….

This video is for our baby daughter who could not be here with us. Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is her absolute favourite song. She doesn’t watch much tv at all and actually doesn’t seem to be too interested in it yet — but there’s a video on Youtube that she loves and watching it is a nightly request. ”Owl….Owl…..” she’ll say, pointing to the computer. Caretaker’s, please show her our sing song lullaby and give her a kiss good night from us. Ahhhhhhhh we miss her terribly.

We all know I love music by now, but I don’t really share too much of it on here. I think I shall start. It really does FEED the soul. Oh yes,…I did just say that.

This is my cousin, Leanne on the left and her daughter, Maerin on the right. I am years older than Maerin. Years…we won’t say how many. ha! I remember that when I was involved in theatre and taking voice lessons, practicing to be the next Patti Lupone — my Auntie Dianne, Maerin’s grandma, would tell me that little Maerin loved singing also. I always thought to myself….. ‘no one loves it as much as me! Duh’….Yes, I’m totally THAT competitive. It’s wrong, I know! But I do usually leave these sorts of thoughts in my head.

Now here we are all these years later and she is still doing it, loving it and seriously ROCKING it out of the park. She is a beautiful girl. And my, oh my…. her voice kinda makes my heart ache – and in the BEST way. I know you will LOVE this clip. It’s just a teeeeeeny clip of what they do, but follow along with her new band here and remember to support live music wherever you are! And if it’s Montreal……..go find them, listen, eat, drink and be merry!
